Celebrating 10 Years of Reuse at the Albury Upcycle and Reuse Shop

As the shop celebrates its 10-year milestone, it’s an opportunity to reflect on the thousands of items that have been diverted from landfill, and the positive impact reuse has had on both the environment and the local community.

Partnering for Positive Community Outcomes

A key part of the Upcycle and Reuse Shops success has been its partnership with Aware Programs – a registered NDIS provider offering opportunities for employment for people with disabilities. Through this collaboration, the shop not only supports environmental outcomes but also creates valuable and meaning employment and training opportunities for the people in the community.

The partnership demonstrates how sustainability initiatives can deliver both environmental and social benefits, creating stronger and more connected communities.

Making a Real Difference

Over the past decade, Albury Upcycle and Reuse Shop has prevented an incredible 1,145,301.24 kilograms of materials from entering landfill. By giving pre-loved items a second life, the shop has made a significant contribution to reducing waste and conserving space in the Albury landfill.

Every purchase made at the shop contributes to reducing waste, conserving natural resources, and lowering the environmental impacts associated with manufacturing new products.

Albury’s Upcycle and Reuse Shop is part of a growing movement across regional New South Wales, with many councils establishing reuse initiatives at their Community Recycling Centres and waste facilities.

Several councils within the RAMJO region are demonstrating that reuse shops can successfully reduce landfill, support local communities, and encourage more sustainable consumption.

Together, these initiatives are helping shift attitudes towards waste by showing that many discarded items still have plenty of life left in them.
