Reducing Plastic Waste at Albury Precision Engineering

APE already had well-established systems in place to manage many of its waste streams. Scrap metal, paper, and cardboard are recycled through long-standing supplier relationships, and the business had even identified opportunities to rehome organic waste such as coffee grounds. Despite these efforts, plastic swarf generated during machining processes continued to present a challenge. Limited local options meant this material was often sent to landfill, conflicting with APE’s goal to reduce its environmental footprint wherever possible.

Participation in the NSW EPA’s Bin Trim program provided APE with the support needed to address this issue. Bin Trim is a free program that helps businesses reduce waste to landfill by offering on-site assessments, practical waste reduction advice, and tailored action plans. Through the program, a Bin Trim advisor visited APE’s site, reviewed existing waste practices, and identified opportunities to improve resource recovery.

A key outcome was the introduction of a local solution for plastic swarf. With support from the Bin Trim program, APE was connected to a nearby business willing to take and repurpose the material. This simple change diverted plastic waste from landfill and transformed it into a valuable resource, while also strengthening local supply chain connections.

For APE, the benefits were clear. The business reduced its landfill waste, improved overall waste efficiency, and reinforced its commitment to sustainable operations—all without significant cost or disruption. The experience demonstrates how targeted, practical support through programs like Bin Trim can help regional manufacturers identify opportunities, overcome waste challenges, and achieve meaningful environmental outcomes.
